HURON BRASSWORKS
Gabbard collaborates with Artisan’s
Greg Field from Field Leathers and Brass Sculptor Michael Randazzo from Huron Brassworks on a joint creative project that would undertake an effort that spread across 1.5 year period in the making.
It would included interweaving conversations, ideas and sketches for a modern/classic 1940s style Car Coat with a set of brass buttons and a color hue like no other.
The project concept was to give each Artisan an aspect of work dividing their skills into three while balancing the collaboration efforts equally into one.
After the initial ideas were presented to each Artist the materials were sourced and made available for Field and Randazzo to work their magic and begin the process of hand making the Car Coat OBSCURE.
Greg Field has been designing and making by hand some of the most impressive Leather Jackets in the Heritage community for years now, his speciality attention to detail and pattern design, leaving those of us who absolutely admire that type of heirloom heritage leather speechless, Greg's carful eye ever watching over each stitch and seam is a true statement of his craft and passion to create stunning results from a one man shop operation.
After realizing that our initial conversation to collaborate took place back in 2020 we had a good laugh and decided to carve out a serious block of spare time for this side project to take momentum, I began working on two large pebble grain Natural hides of leather that Wickett & Craig produced specifically for this project and the arduous task of over spraying each hide in a Dark Emerald Green Black Walnut ink dye began.
Ten overspray coats were applied to each of the hides then hand washed and dried then burnished by hand and the overspray process was repeated resulting in a 20 layer over-sprayed Viridian Green color tone like no other.
The hides were then shipped to Scotland for Field to work his magic while I was back at designing a workable prototype button for Randazzo to sculpt from solid brass.
Michael Randazzo from Huron Brasswoks is a name known in the creative industry for being one of the finest Brass Sculptor artist in America, lucky for me Randazzo and I have worked perfectly in the past collaborating on 3 previous KREOSOTE projects and his work is notably seen on my PaRLOR SkAR Boot Buckles and again on the FiCTioN-1845 Belt Buckle.
Randazzo's gift among many is his ability to interrupt a sketched idea and make it reality, so I provided him with a template design from an architectural photograph I shot years ago, breaking the photgraph into 3rds and copying the image by hand drawning the lines as perfectly as I could so he could then hand cut each brass button and engraved the tops exactly as the photographic line detail image was presented to him which he did effortlessly reveling a button work of Art like no other.
To say I’m blown away with the results are an understatement, Field and Randazzo creative talents are in a category of their own and it was an absolutely honor working with them both on OBSCURE.
